The Farm

Ganzvlei is a family-owned farm in the Goukamma valley,  on the N2 between Knysna and Sedgefield in the heart of the South African Garden Route, and adjoining the Goukamma Nature Reserve. The name Ganzvlei means “goose marsh” in Cape Dutch, and is a fitting description of this riverine valley with its abundant birdlife.

The farm lies alongside the Goukamma river, which means “fat water” in the ancient Khoi language. The first title deeds to the farm date from the late 1700’s and the valley and its river crossings are mentioned in accounts of early explorers. The green pastures alongside the dark water have been a feature of the district familiar to passers-by ever since.
